Google Ads – The new updated form of Adwords

Rebranding and it feels so good! Google is creating a new perception with new changes to the Google Adwords platform making it into Google Ads.

The search based ad system was just about to turn 18 too! Bye Adwords!

What does this mean to local Edmonton businesses using Google Adwords? Your YEG marketing campaigns will continue as scheduled, but the new platform will have to be learned.

The DoubleClick is dead! Long live Google Ad Manager!

The products from DoubleClick, the ad network Google bought in 2008, are becoming part of the two other products. The new Google Marketing Platform merges DoubleClick Digital Marketing and the Google Analytics 360 Suite.

The new product will be called Google Marketing Platform, the company is introducing Display & Video 360, which blends features from DoubleClick Bid Manager, Campaign Manager, Studio and Audience Center.

It will be a simpler hub for creative, agency, and media teams to work together on ad campaigns.

Introducing Google’s bouncing new baby – Google Ads, targeting small Edmonton businesses, using the new default Smart campaigns.

Smart Ads and Smart Campaigns can be “created in minutes” on the new platform, driving anything from website visits to phone calls and brick-and-mortar store visits.

According to Google, 90% of small business owners state that their online advertising goals are to get phone calls, store visits, or purchases online.

When creating a new campaign with Smart Ads, you begin by selecting the goals that are most appropriate for your business. You can select multiple, allowing Google to craft a plan for you to reach users on multiple platforms that aid your goals and KPIs. With the new Smart Ads platform that’s in beta testing, one advertiser was able to double their sales in the first 60 days alone.

Google claims the Smart campaigns let YEG based marketers even more quickly design and launch ad campaigns and provide far better audience-targeting features than standard AdWords campaigns.

According to Google, on July 24, Google Ads users will start seeing the new brand name and logo reflected on the platform, website, billing and help center. Instead of logging into AdWords from adwords.google.com, you will log into Google Ads from ads.google.com.

Thankfully, Google made one big thing clear with the release of the new update:

Changes to the Google Ads branding will not impact your campaign performance, navigation, or reporting.”

The new Google Ads experience is going to also release new integrations to Google Docs and Google Sheets, you can create custom reports in just a few minutes.

 

How To Use The Google Sheets plugin

If you aren’t currently using Google Chrome as your browser, you will need it to run the Google Sheets plugin. Though this mode is currently still in Beta, anyone can download it and use it today!

To find it, follow this link: Google Sheets Beta AdWords Integration. Simply install this free plugin to your Google Sheets account, and you can fire up reports in no time.

With the integration in this link, you can:

Create custom reports that pull information directly from your AdWords account(s).
Custom create columns based on the metrics you care about most.
Use the same filters you find on AdWords to get specific data.
Generate a report overview.
Refresh your custom reports to import the latest data. Meaning you don’t have to create new reports every time. You simply refresh them to update the data.
Allow others to edit and collaborate on your reports.

Once you install the Sheets plugin, you should see it located in the “Add-ons” section of your toolbar.

Then select “Google AdWords,” and you have the option to create new reports.

When you create a new report, you can select the report type, columns, and filters that you want to apply:

Each time you log back into your reporting dashboard on Google Sheets using the plugin, you will see key data like:

When your report was last refreshed
What accounts this report is pulling data from
All of your custom report data that you generated last time

So, why should you use this overgeneralized reporting within AdWords itself?

Two major reasons:

You don’t have to recreate the reports every time.
You don’t have to continually apply filters each time. For example, do you create reports to show how mobile is doing? How about custom filters to see how conversions change by device type and location? You can now create all of these reports in Google Sheets once, keeping them forever. You can then label each report so you know exactly what they show. When you want new data, simply refresh the report, and it populates with your latest data! That saves tons of time!
You can collaborate.
Collaboration is a wonderful feature with Google Docs in general, so why not mesh that with Google AdWords? Allow employees to help you and pull data whenever without giving them direct access to sensitive account information.

Try out the new plugin to start creating better reporting measures for your business today. Don’t waste time every week adding filters and custom reporting measures over and over. Do it once and refresh it with the click of a button.

Smart Ads:

This new “Image Picker” feature allows you to A/B test images automatically. Google will select the best performers to keep running.

New features like this are going to be game changers for small businesses with less time to manage their accounts.

Use Google to forward the URL of your website!

Google Domains

Congratulations on having your very own website! Are you ready to purchase a custom domain, or do you have a new domain (the name of your website, in my case www.sarahvanmarketing.com ) that you want to forward your old website too?

It sounds complicated but it is really quite easy to forward your old website to a new name.

 

Name Servers

Name servers store the configuration of your domains as a collection of resource records. If you use the Google Domain servers, you can figure out your domain. Or you can enter up to 13 custom nameservers and configure your domain using a 3rd party DNS provider. So if you bought the name for your website from Go Daddy or BlueHost you can enter it in Google Domain still.

DNSSEC – Domain Name System Security Extensions

This is important to make sure you enable your DNSSEC. This protects your domain from attacks such as DNS cache poison attacks and DNS spoofing. Think of it as a suit of armour around your website domain.

Synthetic Records

Synthetic Records are unique to Google Domains. They perform tasks that require multiple resource records, like mapping the domains and subdomains required to integrate with G-suite.

  • Creating email forwarding alias like yourname@yourbusiness.com
  • Adding all the resource records necessary to integrate your domain with a 3rd party host

You can configure Synthetic Records directly in the DNS tab in Google Domains. Others are set up automatically by Google Domains when you set up web forwarding.

Dynamic DNS

This is what directs your domain or a subdomain to a resource with a dynamically assigned IP address, that you can edit on the DNS tab.

Sub Domain Forwarding

This is how you direct a sub domain to a named url. For example. yourbusinessname.com/yourproduct and have a simpler url like yourproduct.com

How to set up your new name on your old website:

Step #1 Sign into your personal Google Account.

If you do not have a Google account you will have to sign up for one in order to use Google Domains.

Always write down your passwords in a safe place, try a file folder on your computer.

Step #2 Click My Domains

This will require you to add your domain you already purchased, or you can buy one directly from Google.

Step #3 Click On DNS Tab

Remember this is where you will configure synthetic records.

Step #4 Scroll down to Synthetic Records

This is where you will do the forwarding.

Step #5 Select your subdomain from the list

Select Subdomain forward, if yours is not on the list, you will have to doublecheck step 2.

Step #6 Select the type of Redirect

Will this be a temporary redirect? (HTTP 302)

  • Browser won’t cache
  • Forces a look up every time to routing table or DNS Server
  • Changes you make show up quickly

Or will it be a permanent redirect? (HTTP 301)

  • Redirects to cache forwarding address
  • Quicker load time from repeat visitors to your site
  • Changes propagate slowly

Step #7 Choose your Pathforwarding

When you choose to use pathforwarding, this means all the sub pages from your old website will automatically update.

Step #8 Click to Accept Changes of Resource Records

This will save your changes and you are good to go!

Use Google My Business to drive customers to your website!

Just Google it…

Google it! Your Search Engine Result is one of the main ways customers search for your business, or for products and businesses that match yours.

A Google Business Account is easy to build! In fact your customers may have already created one for you by leaving reviews or tagging your business in photos.

Step #1 Sign into your personal Google Account.

If you do not have a Google account you will have to sign up for one in order to create a Google My business profile.

Always write down your passwords in a safe place, try a file folder on your computer.

Create a Google My Business Account. Then create or claim your business listing.

Step #2 Market to your direct niche audience

Where are you located?  Perhaps an area of the City? Advertise to local Towns? Your Province? Country? International?

Step #3 Choose your delivery area

You can choose to list specific cities, postal codes, regions, etc. This can help boost your search results when people are using those same parameters.

Or

You can choose delivery within a distance from your business address you have provided. 1000 Km, 20 Km, etc.

Step #4 Try to find the type of business that best suits your company

Choose from the provided list. It is not very detailed, but come as close as you can.

Step #5 Verify your Business

This can be done by postcard, or sometimes by email, or phone number. Be prepared to get that code!

If you want to be able to alter your business page, or alter that information you have already entered you will need to verify your account.

After you receive your Google My Business postcard, you can follow the directions to verify your location, and your right to post on behalf of the business.

Step #6 Verify your listing using the provided postcard

If you chose to sign up using a postcard delivered by Google just so you can have a letter from Google to show your friends and family it will arrive in about 12-15 days. Now you can control the options regarding your business. Update all your business information; profile pic (Company Logo), cover image, about us, hours of operation (holidays), website url, industry category, contact number & contact email. You can add details about your products and services, all which will help your search results.

Your customers can leave reviews on your Google page. Keep on top of contact as lower rated businesses will appear below higher rated ones.

Google also has a free website builder where it will grab your information right from your Google My Business listing. You can customize the design a bit and publish it to the web. They have a few themes to choose from but your business must be verified in order to access or publish your Google website.
